England vs Croatia – World Cup 2026 Preview: Team News, Kick-Off Time & Predicted Line-Ups

The wait is finally over. England kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the group stage — a Group L showdown against Croatia at the iconic AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

It’s a fixture dripping in history, rivalry, and unfinished business. These two nations have met at major tournaments before, and the outcomes have shaped legacies. Now, under new management and with a fresh squad bursting with talent, England will look to make a statement from the very first whistle.

The Build-Up: England’s Road to the World Cup

Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions arrive in North America on the back of what can only be described as a perfect qualifying campaign. England won all eight of their qualifiers — a remarkable achievement — and in doing so became the first UEFA nation to qualify while keeping eight consecutive clean sheets. It was a statement of defensive solidity rarely seen at international level.

However, the warm glow of that qualification run was somewhat dimmed heading into the tournament. Back-to-back friendly defeats against Japan and Uruguay raised eyebrows and gave pundits reason to question whether Tuchel’s side were truly ready for the demands of a World Cup. England did recover to beat Costa Rica, but the questions remain. none of that matters too much when the real thing begins, of course. And England’s record in World Cup openers is actually quite reassuring — they have lost just one of their last eight opening fixtures at the tournament. Tuchel will be desperate to channel the team’s qualification form rather than their pre-tournament jitters.

For English fans, this game carries enormous emotional weight. Croatia wrecked England’s World Cup dreams in the 2018 semi-finals in Russia, winning 2-1 after extra time in one of the most heartbreaking nights in recent Three Lions history. They also famously denied England a place at Euro 2008 in a stunning result at Wembley. The 1-0 win against these same opponents at Euro 2020 — courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s goal — offered some comfort, but the full score hasn’t been settled yet.

Croatia: Battle-Hardened and Ready Again

Make no mistake — Croatia are nobody’s easy opener. Zlatko Dalic’s side have been one of the most consistent tournament teams in world football over the past decade. They reached the semi-finals at the last two World Cups and have repeatedly punched above their weight on football’s biggest stage.

In qualifying, they were equally impressive — losing just once across eight matches to comfortably top their group. Their preparation for this tournament hasn’t been entirely smooth, though. A 2-0 defeat to Belgium in a friendly in Rijeka was a worrying sign, and they also lost to Brazil in pre-tournament preparation. But Croatia have a habit of turning it on when it truly counts, and Dallas is the kind of stage they thrive on.

The ghost of that 2018 semi-final will be their greatest motivation. They know they have the psychological edge walking into this fixture, and that counts for something.

Team News

England

There was a significant blow to Tuchel’s squad just days before the tournament opener. Tino Livramento picked up a calf injury during a training session on Sunday, ruling him out of the entire tournament. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been called up as his replacement and is in line to provide cover at the back.

With Livramento unavailable, Nico O’Reilly — the young Manchester City prospect — is expected to come in at left-back and could earn a surprise first major tournament start. It’s a big ask for a youngster, but Tuchel has clearly seen enough in training to trust him.

The biggest selection headache in the final third is the battle for the No. 10 role. Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers are competing for the same berth, with the Real Madrid man expected to edge it and operate behind Harry Kane as the primary creative outlet. Tuchel will know that Bellingham’s ability to change a game makes him a near-certain starter.

On the right wing, Bukayo Saka has declared himself fit to start despite the ongoing careful management of a lingering Achilles issue. However, Noni Madueke could still come in from the right if Saka’s fitness isn’t deemed sufficient on the day. Anthony Gordon appears set to start on the left ahead of Marcus Rashford. in defence, Tuchel must also decide between Marc Guehi, John Stones, and Ezri Konsa for the two centre-back spots.

Croatia

By contrast, Dalic is in the fortunate position of having a fully fit squad. The biggest concern heading into the tournament was Luka Modric, who suffered a cheekbone fracture back in April. The veteran midfielder — still one of the finest players of his generation — has recovered completely and is ready to start. His influence in the middle of the park will be crucial to how Croatia perform.

Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic have also recovered from knocks picked up during their domestic seasons and are available. Teenage defender Luka Vuskovic is expected to line up alongside Josip Sutalo and Gvardiol in a back three.

Duje Caleta-Car returned to full training after a back issue, giving Dalic extra options at the back. Up front, local Dallas striker Petar Musa is pushing for a start ahead of the more experienced Andrej Kramaric.

Head-to-Head Record

The fixture history between England and Croatia is one that stirs strong emotions, particularly on the English side.

  • 2018 World Cup Semi-Final: Croatia 2-1 England (AET) — one of England’s most painful recent memories
  • Euro 2020 Group Stage: England 1-0 Croatia — Raheem Sterling’s goal launched England’s run to the final

The head-to-head is tighter than many casual fans might remember, which is precisely why this game demands respect from both sides.

Final

On paper, this is England’s toughest match in Group L — their remaining fixtures come against Ghana and Panama, neither of which should pose the same level of threat as a tournament-savvy Croatian side.

Getting a win here, and particularly a clean sheet, would set the tone perfectly for Tuchel’s side and go some way to silencing the doubters who emerged after those pre-tournament friendly results. Kane, Bellingham, and co. have the quality to unlock any defence, but Croatia’s resilience and Modric’s ability to control a game should never be underestimated.

It promises to be a fascinating tactical battle between two coaches who respect each other deeply — and a game that fans on both sides will remember for a very long time, whatever the result.

Prediction: England 2-1 Croatia
